An example of a small tool that would need one is a small welding tool, which is still able to create sparks.
It is very important to bear in mind that several people may come into contact with a given piece. Examples of this are janitors, who may accidentally knock in to a machine, or mechanics, who regularly do maintenance work on specific pieces of equipment.
For some machine guards, self-installation can be done, such as with safety switches or special lighting. For others, however, it is best to let professionals do the installation. At the least, professionals should be consulted before any installation is done.
Despite the needs for having them, not all places use machine guards for their equipment.
